School Supply Drive!

Sometimes parents of school-age kids can have a hard time purchasing everything on their kids’ school supply list due to circumstances beyond their control.

Did You Know? The average annual cost of school supplies in the US is $104 per child; not including clothing or electronics.

A trio of friends saw this need and decided to step up, take action, and organize a school supply drive in the Walkertown, NC community.

We’re grateful they allowed us to play a role in this awesome event by putting together signage and promotions around town to help get the word out…and later this week we will also be making our own donation of supplies!

Want to Give Back? Check out the link below for donation drop off locations and a list of most needed supplies.

And, even if you aren’t in Walkertown, we hope this has inspired you to donate supplies to your local school, so kids can get a strong foundation in education.

One love, y’all!

Work is NOT a four-letter word…most days.

Our team has been super busy lately dreaming up all the ways to fund-raise for this work we’ll be doing in Jamaica. Fundraising is one of those things that you either hate or love, I think. Who really wants to go begging? It’s not in most of our natures for sure. I think the things we’ve learned as a team is that it takes hard work NOW in the USA so we can go and do hard work THEN in Jamaica. I haven’t yet found it written in Scripture that it would be easy to do God’s work anyway! At any rate, it’s really cool how God is working on us already to prepare our minds and hearts through our NOW work to be stronger and more ready for our THEN work.

Check out some things we’ve been working on…

Saturday, March 17th – Barbecue Fundraiser – if you are in or near Walkertown, North Carolina, come enjoy some of the best barbeque and fixin’s around.

Saturday, May 12th – Golf Tournament – Save the Date! More info coming soon.

Building Jamaica Etsy Shop – we are just getting started, there’s lots more in the works! Favorite our shop and come back often!

Spaghetti, Garlic Toast and Reggae?

What better to prepare you for time in Jamaica than serving a spaghetti dinner – right? Well, there’s a little dichotomy in that, but it’s just what we did last Saturday evening! Our host church puts on an annual Italian Night, complete with aforementioned meal and a bevy of romantic crooners to keep your ears happy while you fill your belly.

We were given the opportunity to speak for a few minutes in-between the love songs about our upcoming trip and educate folks about where we are headed and why. Most of our mission, I feel like, is making sure people know that there’s more to God’s World than the place they are in right now. We’ve been given opportunity after opportunity to speak RIGHT HERE about this special place called Jamaica. I’m not sure who is supposed to hear the message, or why, but if the Big Man Upstairs keeps putting us in front of microphones, then I suppose someone is supposed to hear about this work He wants us to do. ๐Ÿ™‚

To give you a bit of a good chuckle, here’s one of our teammates, Derrick, in the kitchen keeping clean while washing dishes from the meal. You can tell I really love his fashionable attire, yes folks, that’s the real name-brand deal – Hefty – not the fake stuff.

There’s nothing better than to serve, and clean up after a meal, side by side with the people that you love!

So I just GOT A CALL FROM JAMAICA TODAY! We have been playing phone tag with our host, Wolde Kristos back and forth and it was SO nice to speak to him directly. Makes me want to go hop on a plane tomorrow! He called to let me know that one of the ladies on our list of folks to help with housing repair was asking him if we are still coming and that she is excited that we will be there soon. (Yes – even 5-6 months in Jamaica is “soon come”!) It’s amazing to realize that we are already beginning to be welcomed into the community of Bluefields and people are anticipating our presence.

Also, do mark your calendars for some of these upcoming fundraising events:

February 25 – 4:30-7:00PM: Italian Night – a delicious spaghetti dinner complete with classic romantic song performances and yummy desserts! @ Morris Chapel UMC, 2715 Darrow Rd., Walkertown, NC 27051

March 17 – Time TBD: 32nd Annual BBQ –
pick up a plate of slow-cooked BBQ, homemade slaw and potato salad that’s been a tradition for as long as I’ve been a-livin’ @ Morris Chapel UMC, 2715 Darrow Rd., Walkertown, NC 27051

May 12 – Time TBD: Golf Tournament
in Kernersville, NC.
